Dr. Shinsuke Sakakibara, IFR PresidentSeptember 2013

Dear Reader,

The annual study World Robotics has just been published and forecasts are promising. The Robotics industry is looking into a bright future. Challenges facing our industry are not easy but they are feasible. One of the most important challenges I think is the human robot cooperation, i.e. robot assistant. The implementation of this technique including advanced safety measures, easier, flexible and even more interactive programming and integration will open up plenty of new application fields.

What do I see as the most important challenges for the IFR in the future?

  • Increasing worldwide acceptance of robots
  • Continuing the promotion of international co-operations on the entire field of robot technologies
  • Continuing to increase the membership to strengthen the importance of the IFR in the world
  • Continuing the improvement and promotion of the IFR robot market study “World Robotics”- the source for valid robot data

There are still more challenges which we will discuss in the upcoming meetings.
We will meet in two exciting locations in Asia, in October and November:

From 24 to 27 October in Seoul

  • 44th ISR2013 - presenting the most recent results of robot researchers and visions of the future
  • IFR General Assembly - scheduling our future activities of the IFR

From 6 to 9 November in Tokyo

  • 20th iREX - Making a Future with Robots -
  • IFR Robot Suppliers meeting - discussing the results of World Robotics and scheduling future activities to improve the statistics

My term in office ends in October 2013 and a new IFR President will be elected during the meeting in Seoul. As I look back to an exciting period, I would like to thank all of you for your kind support and great contribution in improving the IFR.

Sincerely yours

Dr. Shinsuke Sakakibara
IFR President
